ReSTOR intraocular lens
Through a unique technological advance, we now have
available an intraocular lens that provides you with a quality range
of vision - near through distance- in one optical system, to deliver
a high level of spectacle freedom!
This lens was designed to replace your natural lens,
which may be getting harder, more yellow, and more cloudy with time.
This condition is called a cataract (hyperlink to cataract page
on Eye Conditions). Surgery can remove the cloudy lens when the
cataract causes enough loss of vision to interfere with your daily
activities.
Traditionally, the lens has been replaced with a single
lens inside the eye, called an intraocular lens. This lens is usually
focused for distance, and you would need to wear reading glasses
to focus at all near tasks and objects.
But, the new ReSTOR lens has changed this - the optics
of this new lens incorporates a technology called apodizaiton, to
offer a full range of vision in a single lens, resulting in the
highest level of spectacle freedom post cataract surgery.
How it works
Apodization is a gradual reduction or blending of
12 concentric step heights. The gradual change creates a smooth
transition of light bewennt he distance, intermediate and near focal
points to improve image quality while minimizing visual disturbances.
This unique technology optimally manages light energy
delivered to the retina because it distriubutes the appropriate
amount of light to near and distant focal points, regardless of
lighting situations.
What to expect
- Nearly 94% of patients were so satisfied they would
have the procedure again
- 80% of patients were without glasses for both near
and distance tasks most of the time
- 85% of patients were able to see without glasses
20/25 in distance and J2 at near (smaller than newsprint)
- 25% of patients experienced some glare and haloes
How soon after the procedure will I be able to see
at varying distances?
For most patients, near vision is good the next day, and improves
over the following week. Results are best when both eyes have ReSTOR
lenses implanted.
Is this right for me?
Anyone who has a normal eye exam and is dependent
on reading glasses or bifocals may be a candidate. Although ReSTOR
lenses are a breakthrough technology initially approved for cataract
patients with our without presbyopia, it is not necessary to need
cataract surgery to qualify for the ReSTOR lens - just a desire
to restore eyesight at a range of distances without corrective eyewear.
- You have realistic expectations - Satisfaction
will be based on setting realistic expectations. Not all patients
who receive this lens will be spectacle free, but FDA clinical
studies show that 80% of patients who received this lens reported
they never needed to wear glasses.
- You are motivated to reduce dependency on glasses,
for both near and far objects
- You have a cataract requiring removal of your cloudy
natural lens, although you do not need to qualify for cataract
surgery to have this technology
You may not be a candidate if you
- Expect perfect vision
- Have excessive complaints about your prescription
- Drive at night for a living or have an occupation
or hobbies that depend on good night vision
- Are an amateur or commercial airline pilot
- Have lifelong complaints about glare
- Are happy wearing glasses
- Want guarantees on surgical outcomes
